About Bending the Archwire In this book, we attempt to explain the design and mechanical characteristics of the standard edgewise orthodontic appliance in contradistinction to those of the preadjusted edgewise appliance. The principles and techniques of the standard edgewise orthodontic treatment described are based on the Tweed edgewise orthodontic technique which has been employed and modified in the Department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics at Osaka University. Mastery of the standard edgewise technique benefits orthodontic experts because in doing so they become able to refine treatment outcomes, optimizing care for each individual patient at a level which cannot be attained by simply using a preadjusted edgewise appliance. The standard edgewise technique allows the practitioner to produce a made-to-order occlusion that is aesthetically and functionally optimal.
